In an article for TIME magazine, Yale critical computing scholars Dr. Yoehan Oh and Professor Theodore Kim, along with Dr. Jacinda Tran from Harvard University, investigated the life and legacy of Vietnamese computer scientist Bùi Tường Phong.
They found that not only has been name been cited incorrectly for the last 50 years, but his image has been misattributed, and his early death at age 32 is connected to the United States military’s use of chemical weapons during the Vietnam War.
Their findings were also published as a short paper at SIGGRAPH 2024, and will be presented at the conference in July.
